It was in this Tuscan city that Renaissance town planning concepts were first put into practice after Pope Pius II decided, in 1459, to transform the look of his hometown. He chose the architect Bernardo Rossellino, who applied the principles of his mentor, Leon Battista Alberti. This new vision of urban space has materialized in the superb square called Piazza Pio II and in the buildings that surround it: the Palazzo Piccolomini, the Palazzo Borgia and the cathedral with its exterior in pure Renaissance style.

Pienza is a small town in the Province of Siena, whose historic center has been awarded the prestigious recognition of UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town planning of Pienza is another important example of the application of the principles of the "Ideal City". Initially, the restructuring desired by Pope Pius II, was to be limited to the historic center only, only later was it decided to continue the project by extending it to the whole town. The works were commissioned to Bernardo Rossellino and at the end of these the Cathedral, the Palazzo Comunale, and those of the Borgia and Piccolomini families were inaugurated..
