Fortunago Itineray
Things to do in Italy?
Review and Itinerary by Baldassarri Giuseppe from Italy
°-°
Fortunago is a charming village located in the Lombardy region of Italy. Known for its medieval atmosphere and panoramic views, Fortunago offers a delightful experience for visitors. Here's a suggested itinerary to discover the attractions, local food, and wine specialties in and around Fortunago:
Day 1:
- Arrive in Fortunago and check into your accommodation. The village itself is a sight to behold, with its cobbled streets and well-preserved medieval architecture.
- Start your exploration by taking a stroll through the village center. Admire the ancient buildings, including the Church of San Giorgio and the Castle of Fortunago.
- Enjoy a leisurely lunch at a local trattoria, where you can taste traditional Lombard dishes. Try local specialties like risotto alla Milanese (saffron risotto), ossobuco (braised veal shanks), or panettone (a traditional Italian Christmas cake).
- In the afternoon, take a guided tour of the Castle of Fortunago. Learn about its history and enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from the castle walls.
- Visit a nearby winery to experience the local wine culture. Lombardy produces excellent wines, including the renowned sparkling wine Franciacorta and Oltrepò Pavese wines. Participate in a wine tasting and learn about the winemaking process.
Day 2:
- Take a day trip to the nearby town of Pavia, located about 30 kilometers from Fortunago. Explore the historic center, visit the beautiful Pavia Cathedral, and stroll along the picturesque Ticino River. Pavia is also known for its culinary traditions, so be sure to try local dishes like tortelli di zucca (pumpkin-filled pasta) and busecca (tripe soup).
- Alternatively, you can visit the scenic Oltrepò Pavese wine region. Take a drive through the rolling hills and vineyards, stopping at different wineries for tastings. Enjoy the breathtaking landscapes and indulge in local gastronomic delights.
Day 3:
- Spend the morning exploring the natural beauty of the area. You can go hiking or cycling in the nearby hills and enjoy the peaceful countryside.
- Enjoy a picnic lunch with local products such as cheeses, cured meats, and freshly baked bread.
- In the afternoon, visit the Museum of Natural History in Voghera, located a short drive away. The museum showcases various exhibits of local flora, fauna, and geology, providing insights into the region's natural heritage.
- End the day with a visit to a local dairy farm, where you can learn about the production of Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano cheese. Taste the different varieties and consider purchasing some to take home.
Regarding accommodations, Fortunago itself offers some options for accommodations such as bed and breakfasts or small hotels. Alternatively, you can choose to stay in nearby towns like Voghera or Pavia, which provide a wider range of options.
As for the duration of the itinerary, three days should be sufficient to explore Fortunago and its surroundings. However, if you wish to have a more relaxed pace or explore the region in more depth, you can consider extending your stay by a day or two.
To get to Fortunago, the nearest major airport is Milan Malpensa Airport. From there, you can rent a car and drive to Fortunago, which is approximately a 1.5 to 2-hour drive away. Alternatively, you can take a train from Milan to Voghera or Pavia and then arrange for local transportation to Fortunago.
