North Italy In June 2013 we went on a Mediterranean cruise departing from Venice. Before boarding the cruise ship we had arrived early into Venice and took a circular road trip around the northern part of Italy starting from Treviso just outside Venice and travelling in a counter-clockwise route through Vicenza, Verona, Milan, Parma, Bologna and Ferrara. This journey gave us a real flavour of Italy from small towns to the larger cities such as Milan, with interesting historical sites, wonderful architecture and of course a tremendous selection of great Italian food and wine. The starting point of Treviso was a real surprise with canals similar to those seen in Venice. Our next stop was a visit to the outstanding La Rotonda mansion house in Vicenza. Verona, home of Romeo & Juliet, was a great city to visit with interesting streets and some great food and wine. The large city of Milan offered a different viewpoint with magnificent churches, the interesting Sforzesco Castle and shopping at the stunning Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. Being familiar with the famous parma ham it was a joy to visit the town of Parma where we spent a long time in a wonderful delicatessen shop sampling and buying parma ham, cheeses and olive oil. Bologna, our next stop, also had a food related name and again was a great city to walk around along the unique porticos. Our last stop before returning to our starting point was Ferrara, a really colourful place with the wonderful small cobbled streets of Via delle Volte and of course some more wonderful food and Italian wine to try. This book gives a brief photographic journey through northern Italy and with the many images, the text descriptions and maps this will hopefully give you inspiration to plan your own trip to this fascinating area of Italy.
