Photo from Italy by @giuseppebaldassarri The phenomenon is due to the refraction of sunlight by the atmosphere, when the grazing solar rays, crossing a thicker layer of air, are broken down as in a prism into the various colored components, and among these the green one is distinguished by contrast  with the general yellow-orange hue of the sky. In detail, the color of the ray is Veronese green, named in honor of the painter who discovered the pigment, Paolo Veronese.
