Monte Conero The spectacular landscape

According to the most common hypothesis, the name Conero means "mountain of the strawberry trees", deriving from the Greek κόμαρος (kòmaros), that is strawberry tree, a very widespread Mediterranean tree in the Conero woods and which produces characteristic red fruits which are very popular locally.
Mount Conero, the only stretch of limestone rocky coast from Trieste to the Gargano, breaks the linear and sandy Adriatic coast into two sections with different orientation, thus deserving the nickname "elbow of Italy", also shared by the city of Ancona .
The coastal part is the one with the steepest slopes, while it descends much more gently towards the hinterland. On this side, the mountain has gullies, some of which can be traveled along in the itineraries of the Park.
The spectacular landscape of the high coast originated from the millenary erosive action of the waves; like all high coasts, the Conero Riviera is in fact subject to landslides. The best known is the prehistoric one to which the formation of Portonovo is due.
From the whole of the Marche mountains, the Monte stands out in the panorama like a dark green dome that pushes into the sea.
