Offida The Square

The square was born, in Italy, at the dawn of the Middle Ages or as a churchyard of the Cathedral or as a large square in front of the seat of the civil authority.  Hence two types of square, one of a religious nature, the other of a civil, and secondarily commercial character.
The two types can merge, as in Ferrara, for example, in the arcades on the side of the Cathedral, but a gap always remains at the base, and determines different characteristics for urban planning and architectural arrangement.
Finally, a third type arises, the market square, whether it is for herbs or in any case of the itinerant market and this type will also be qualified in a particular way;  depending on the regions.
