Lazio is a region of central Italy overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its capital, Rome, is the capital of Italy and was the heart of the ancient Roman Empire. Among its iconic monuments is the Colosseum, an amphitheater that could accommodate thousands of spectators. On the coast, the ancient port of Ostia still preserves refined mosaics and a theater. Inland there are the wooded mountains of the Apennines, with nature reserves, lakes and stone villages.

1. Castel di Tora, Rieti Between scents of gorse and thyme, Castel di Tora stretches out on the banks of the artificial lake of the Turano, surrounded by a crown of thick and luxuriant woods. The Palazzo del Drago and the entire village of Antuni rise in the small peninsula that juts out into the body of water.
2. Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve, Viterbo, The Monte Rufeno Nature Reserve extends for about 3000 hectares in the territory of the municipality of Acquapendente, where special itineraries wind: hiking trails, nature and cycle paths.
3. Cervara of Rome. In the heart of the Simbruini Mountains Natural Park, Cervara in Rome is the country of artists, a small silent jewel at the gates of the capital. Since the early 1800s it has attracted artists from all over the world: the French painter Ernest Hebert, Joseph Anton Koch, Rafael Alberti and the master Ennio Morricone, have found inspiration for their art in its bucolic charm.

4. Fossanova Abbey, Fossanova Abbey is one of the most significant examples of Cistercian Gothic art in Italy. The cloister was the place reserved for the walking and meditation of the friars; of particular interest is the shrine built to protect a washbasin on the side of the Refectory.
5. Ponza Island 722 hectares an hour by hydrofoil from Anzio or Formia, the island of Ponza is a primitive, wild piece of land, among the most beautiful in Lazio. To admire the pastel colored houses of the port, the strip of beach dug into the tuff of Chiaia di Luna, Monte Guardia and the Roman necropolis in Bagno Vecchio.

Sacro Bosco di Bomarzo - At the foot of Monte Cimino, in the province of Viterbo, stands the Villa of Wonders, also called Sacro Bosco or "initiatory" forest, commissioned by Prince Orsini in 1552, and built by the architect Pirro Logori. The forest hides stone wonders, little monsters, mythological creatures, exotic animals that create a wonderful magical scenery.

Rome A lively and chaotic metropolis, Rome shows the vestiges of its great past in all that surrounds it: the Basilica of San Pietro, the Fori Imperiali, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Colosseum. 8. Monterozzi Necropolis, Tarquinia. The Necropolis of Monterozzi is the largest existing pictorial nucleus of Etruscan art and the most important document of all ancient painting before the Roman imperial age. The painted tombs cover the entire hill, more than six thousand are known, including the tombs of the Leonesses, the Leopards and the Hunting and Fishing.

Civitella d'Agliano Characteristic medieval village that stands on a tuff hill on the Tiber valley, Civitella d'Agliano is surrounded by ancient walls from which inside the Torre dei Monaldeschi, the imposing bastion and the ancient parish church . The Castle of Agliano, from which the town takes its name, is testimony to the long stay of the Monaldeschi family.
10. The lost city of Norba The ancient city of Norba was built on a plateau overlooking the Pontine plain. Founded according to legend by Hercules and the Cyclops, the town is striking for the monumentality of the circuit of the walls in polygonal work and the suggestion of the natural beauty.
11. The Devil's Well, Arsoli. Art, tradition, history: in the city of Arsoli you can find all kinds of attractions. In the area between Pian dell'Acero and Piani Uggi, south of Arsoli it is possible to undertake one of the most suggestive mountain routes: the Pozzo del Diavolo. Along the Bagnatore stream, you reach two huge eroded rocks which together with other boulders make up the group of the "Dead Femmona", to which a singular legend is linked.
12. The Orlando Grotto, Sutri. In the Middle Ages Sutri was one of the main stops on the Via Francigena, the road that connected Paris to Rome. The popular tradition, consolidated by the Franco-Venetian chivalric poems of the XII century, tells that the famous epic hero and paladin Orlando, Marquis of Chiaramonte was born right here in this small village.
13. Natural Park of Monti Lucretili. Designated as one of the largest parks in all of Lazio, the Monti Lucretili Natural Park extends from the front of the Apennines towards the Tyrrhenian plain. Lush and wild, the park dominates the valley of the License torrent, amidst wide karst plains, ponds and silent woods.
14. San Puoto Lake, Fondi. Surrounded by the Aurunci and Ausoni mountains, Fondi lies in a flat area south of Lazio. The city is home to Lake San Puoto, a small body of water with a legendary history. At thirty meters deep, in fact, it is said that there are the remains of an ancient city, the tacitae Amyclae described by Virgil and Cicero.
15. Canale Monterano, Viterbo. Keeper of historical memories, Canale Monterano, in the province of Viterbo, is one of the most fascinating lost cities in the region. The seventeenth-century castle of the Altieri family, the church and convent of San Bonaventura designed by Bernini and the extraordinary arched Roman aqueduct, offer an unforgettable atmosphere.
16. Split Mountain, Gaeta. The complex of the "Split Mountain" or Sanctuary of the S.S. Trinità, is characterized by three fissures arisen from the rock of Monte Orlando, in the municipality of Gaeta. Along the walls there is a small Via Crucis, probably the work of San Bernardino da Siena, while inside the mountain there is the stone bed known as "The bed of San Filippo Neri". Sacred place to the Christian tradition, the split mountain, is considered a miraculous act formed at the death of Christ.
17. Excavations Ostia Antica, Rome. The excavations of Ostia Antica recount the fascinating life of the Romans in the times of King Anco Marzio, from the seventh century BC. C, onwards. Along the Decumanus it is possible to imagine artisan shops, places designated for representation and exchanges, productive activities. The Roman theater, the warehouses, the Piazzale delle Corporazioni and the Fulloniche come to life thanks to the wonderful well-preserved ruins.
18. The Castelli Romani, Rome. From Marino to Genzano, from Ariccia to Frascati to the peaks of Rocca di Papa and Rocca Priora: the Castelli Romani are characterized by a wide range of spaces and beauties. Built on the Albani hills, on the outskirts of Rome, the Castles host historic palaces, archaeological remains and beautiful villas including Villa Tuscolana in Frascati and Villa del Cardinale in Rocca di Papa.
19. Monte Gelato waterfalls. The Monte Gelato waterfalls are born among the Cimini Mountains, in the splendid setting of the Treja valley. In the protected area between the municipalities of Calcata and Mazzano Romano the waterfalls have become famous as movie sets for various films. To make the landscape more suggestive is an ancient water mill located in the area next to the waterfalls.
20. Villa Lante di Bagnaia. Together with the Bomarzo Park, Villa Lante di Bagnaia in the province of Viterbo is one of the most famous mannerist Italian gardens of the 1500s. In an area of 22 hectares, elegant and noble geometric structures unfold, splendid gardens shaded by oaks and fountains that create games of exceptional water.
