In the 9th century, the Western Roman Empire has also fallen, the port of Cupra no longer enjoys Roman protection and is sacked several times by the Moors who destroy it. The cuprensi retire so on the heights giving life to "Castrum Maranum". The marina is never completely abandoned, but fishermen build their houses in the upper part of the village until the nineteenth century when, thanks to the arrival of the railway and the tourist revival of the area, the first settlements "for vacation" begin. At the beginning of the 20th century, the economic boom transformed Cupra Marittima into a real holiday resort with the opening of the first hotels in the marina and with the construction of the elegant villas in Borgo Marano. Today the hill is surrounded by high defensive, crenellated walls. The ancient access door was abandoned in favor of the new door. The center is an intertwining of narrow streets that open onto intimate squares and its breathtaking views of the coast through ancient buildings and sumptuous villas, today, alas for the most part abandoned, whose remains, however, leave us to guess the ancient splendor.

Municipal statutes were issued as early as 1076 and, in the late medieval age, it was involved in the struggles between Ascoli and Fermo for control of the territory. In the 16th century it was sacked by the Turks and in 1861 it was annexed to the nascent Kingdom of Italy. It currently forms part of the capital and is also known as Cupra Alta (or generally the high town of Cupra); however, that of Marano was the official name of the municipality until 1863. .
