Venezia, in Italy. Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari The Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, Sestriere San Polo, 3072, 30125 Venice VE, Italy. Usually just called the Frari, is a church located in the Campo dei Frari at the heart of the San Polo district of Venice, Italy. One of the most prominent churches in the city, it has the status of a minor basilica. The church is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. The basilica, with a Latin cross, is a classic example of the Gothic style, which we could define as Franciscan because, avoiding the glitz of spiers, pinnacles and flying buttresses, it emphasizes the harmony, beauty and simplicity of the lines. The grandiose facade of the basilica is divided into three pillars reduced to simple pilasters of late Gothic style. In the central part above the portal at the top of the pointed arch, stands the risen Christ of Alexander Victoria (1581), while, on the left, stands the Virgin with the Child and, on the right, S. Francesco, statues of Bartolomeo Bon (shortly after 1430). In the lunette the fresco by Gaetano Zompini (XVIII century) is almost illegible, representing the Immaculate Conception among the angels. In correspondence with the naves, three circular rose windows in white Istrian stone open. The left one, white, bears the lion of Venice and the lily of Florence in the carved frame to indicate the internal chapel of the Florentines; the one on the right, a little smaller and two-colored, bears the figure of St. Anthony carved, indicating that inside there is the chapel of the same name.
