Venetian Gothic architecture. Gothic architecture in Venice emerged rather late, only towards the fifteenth century, in fact, the city detaches itself from the eastern influence and suffers from the western cultural climate, so elements of late Gothic are introduced into art in general and in particular in architecture, known in Italy as "flowery" Gothic.

This adjective alludes to the refinement and elegance of that style, which is characterized by spectacular fretwork decorations and a wealth of statues and marbles. Elements of flowery Gothic are also present in the Basilica of San Marco, such as the decoration of the inflected arches of the upper order of the facade and this represents a significant example of how Gothic elements can be grafted very well on a Byzantine substrate. The Basilica of San Marco, whose structure dates back to the eleventh century, is, in fact, the most representative building of Byzantine art in Venice, both for the internal decoration with golden mosaics, and for works of Byzantine goldsmiths, such as the treasure of the Altarpiece d'Oro, both for the external domes that cover the church. The problem of the scarcity of light is connected to them, since in this basilica the windows are open directly in the curvatures of the domes, which therefore offer only a small circle of light, and not on the drum, on which the domes usually rest. The Gothic, although in Italy has taken on its own and different forms in the various cities, is characterized by verticality, brightness, slender and slender columns, pointed arches, which offer a feeling of lightness and which rise thanks to the addition of tracery such as the quadrilobo, which forms a kind of four-leaf clover, a typical element of Venetian art. One of the most beautiful examples of Venetian Gothic architecture is the Palazzo Ducale.
