The pentagonal tower with Ghibelline crenellation in Ortezzano

Location; Torre Ghibellina, Via del Forno, 63851 Ortezzano Province of Fermo, FM, Italy. «Evocative village, it rises on the top of a hill slope that dominates the left bank of the river Aso, situated in the middle valley. Proud and full of historical suggestions, it stands at 301 mt. above sea level. The concentration of monuments of historical and artistic interest in the center, in relation to the territorial extension, makes Ortezzano a real open-air museum. It sees its origins getting lost back in time, up until the time of the Piceni (IX-III century BC). The fertility of the territory, already in Roman times, favored the establishment of rustic villas, one of which was identified in the district San Massimo, where a valuable floor mosaic depicting the Four Seasons came to light. From the 8th century, the territory enters the ranks of the Farfensi possessions witnessed today by the monastery of San Silvestro, the Curtis Sanctae Marinae vel Mariae in Ortatiano, and the Curtis of Sancti Gregorii de Ortezzano. The castrum of Ortezzano also dates back to the high medieval period, a fortified nucleus at the top of the hillside that extends and expands in the 14th century. The pentagonal tower with Ghibelline crenellation dates back to this period, and today represents the most impressive testimony of the ancient castle and became the symbol of the city together with the "Porta da Sole", the only one of the four access gates. A second extension of the castle dates back to the 17th century when the village spreads out to the west with lots of row houses interspersed with streets and still well preserved and visible today ".
