The Grand Canal Venice
The Grand Canal Venice |
The Grand Canal Venice, called the "Canalazzo" by the Venetians, divides the historic center of the city into two parts. It is much older than Venice, and the construction of the city on its banks has had to adapt to the path that the main waterway takes. The Canal runs for about four kilometers and has the shape of an inverted "S" having two ends like the Graft of the Ponte della Libertà and the S. Marco Basin. The Grand Canal, on average, is 5 meters deep and its width varies depending on the points, where it can reach a maximum of 70 meters. Along the entire perimeter, it is possible to appreciate the testimonies of the greatness achieved by the Republic of Venice. The city seen from the water offers the best version of itself: the ornate entrances of the rich buildings along the canal face the water, and seeing them from the Vaporetto really leaves you breathless.
